ezekiel honig : nyc . microcosm

A New York City native, and founder/label manager for the Anticipate and Microcosm labels, Ezekiel Honig concentrates on emotively warm, and largely minimal, music. While being referential of techno and house, and using the loop as more of a tool than a rule, Honig paints outside the lines, striding that blurry area between occasional dance floor sensibility and intriguing, yet heart warming home listening - leaning between a large, expansive view and the most intimate, careful attention to each note, bar and measure. Ambience, soft, colorful tones, found sounds, an occasional dub influence and an affinity for off kilter rhythm edits are all involved in this process, with deceptively simple melodic structures and seemingly random percussive elements and textures - pairing the pure and beautiful with more clunky and dirty "mishaps."

In addition to his studio releases, Honig performs live consistently, and in this setting he strives to stretch outside the boundaries of the recorded material. His improvisational approach combines loops and bits from various songs with on the fly arrangements, editing and effects - yielding new songs from shards of the old. This complements the compositional process - both in terms of sketching ideas, and in developing nuggets of sound into fuller pieces - sometimes splitting into separate tracks, which use tangential variations from the original source. In this manner, the studio and live situations work in tandem - sharing ideas and making the most of their mediums - careful composition in the one, and attention to the details and demands of the moment in the other.

nicholas saucer : nyc . microcosm

Nicholas Sauser is one half of the duo Socks and Sandals. Working in a similar vein to that project, Nicholas makes weird and fluctuating minimal techno. Including an array of source material inside his personality driven perspective on abstract dance floor sound, Nicholas has one foot planted firmly in the history of house music, with the other planted gently in a pulsating future filled with skimmering sonic oddities.

morgan packard : nyc . microcosm

Morgan Packard's search for the perfect music for a benevolent future has led him to study jazz saxophone at Boston's New England Conservatory, to move to London to immerse himself in British drum and bass, to study classical composition, and to learn to program his own software tools. More scholar than fusioneer, he strives to understand the inner workings of the music he studies, using this deep understanding to more effectively create something new, rather than simply appropriating the glittering exotic sounds floating on the surface of the music he hears.

Across all the music he explores, the qualities of beauty, melody, texture, and hypnotic repetition fascinate him, and these qualities unite his work across disparate styles. His various projects and guises include drum and bass singles under his own name and with Offshore Recordings' DJ Clever as "Tundra," deep and melodic electro-instrumentals with childhood friend Phil Salathe under the "Captain Campion" moniker, and the odd modern dance sound design gig.

miskate : philadelphia . foundsound + microcosm

Miskate is Kate Iwanowicz. Originally a Pittsburgh DJ, she held down various residencies as well as receiving a degree in anthropology (and a minor in music) at University of Pittsburgh, where she also participated in a gamelan ensemble. Her interests in sound began at a young age -- first playing violin, then piano, then guitar, now sample-based electronics (often incorporating her own singing voice among other found sounds). Her regular bookings playing deep, minimal house and techno encouraged her move to Philadelphia in Summer, 2001. After relocating, she has taken responsibilities as co-organizer of both the Pitchspork monthly and the Foundsound/Unfoundsound record label. Her production debut came in May, 2004 (alongside Someone Else) with the release of "Rip It Cookie Muenster" on Foundsound, to a wildly positive response. She's since followed up with forward minded solo material for Foundsound, Unfoundsound, Microcosm, Alphahouse, Roman-Photo, Karloff, Einmaleins and plenty more to come.
